New Mexico Sales Tax Exemption Policy:
Diskloop allows eligible businesses and organizations to apply for tax-exempt purchases, following New Mexico state laws. Below, you’ll find who qualifies and how to request a sales tax exemption for your orders.
New Mexico Sales Tax Guidelines:
Unlike most states, New Mexico imposes a Gross Receipts Tax (GRT). The current state base rate is 5.125%, but with local and county additions, total rates typically range from 5.125% to 9.0625% depending on the delivery location.
To qualify for an exemption (technically a "deduction" in New Mexico), you must provide specific Nontaxable Transaction Certificates (NTTC) or other state-approved documentation.
Eligibility For Tax Exemption:
- Nonprofit Organizations: Charitable, religious, and educational organizations that are properly registered as nonprofit entities may qualify for exemption. You must provide a Type 9 NTTC issued by the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department.
- Government Agencies: Federal, state, and local government departments are generally exempt from New Mexico sales tax on eligible purchases. For these entities, an official Purchase Order (PO) or a Type 9 NTTC is required.
- Resale Businesses: If your company is buying products only for resale, you must provide a Type 2 NTTC.
- Out-of-State Purchasers: New Mexico does not accept resale certificates from other states. If your business is outside New Mexico and you want to buy for resale, check with a tax advisor to understand your tax responsibilities.
Application Process For New Customers:
- Account Registration:
Create an account on our website to request tax-exempt status. You’ll use this account to manage and submit your exemption requests.
- Prepare Required Documentation: Ensure your certificates are fully executed. New Mexico requires the New Mexico Business Tax Identification Number (NMBTIN)—formerly known as the CRS number—to be present on all NTTCs.
- Documentation Submission: Email your completed tax exemption certificate to support@diskloop.com. Be sure to include your account details or order number so we can find your request quickly.
- Document Evaluation: Our support team will check your documents during regular business hours to confirm your eligibility.
- Approval Notification:If you’re approved, we’ll send you a confirmation email and update your customer profile to show your tax-exempt status.
- Future Order Processing: After approval, your qualifying purchases will be processed without sales tax. If you were charged tax before approval, we’ll refund any eligible amount.
Existing Customers:
If we have already approved and recorded your tax-exempt status, you do not need to do anything else right now.
Some exemption certificates need to be renewed from time to time. Please send us updated documents if your certificate expires, changes, or becomes invalid, so you stay compliant.
Multi-State Operations:
If your organization does business in more than one state, you need to send separate exemption documents for each state where you want an exemption.
Keep in mind that New Mexico does not accept resale certificates from other states. If your order is delivered in New Mexico, it will be charged the 6% state sales tax unless you submit and get approval for a valid New Mexico exemption certificate.
